In order to bring awareness about astronomy among general public and students, Kalpana Chawla Memorial Planetarium is working under aegis Haryana State Council for Science and Technology. Planetarium is joint venture of Govt. of Haryana and Govt. of India. Planetarium was inaugurated on July, 24th 2007 in the memory of Dr. Kalpana Chawla who belonged to Haryana's Karnal district. Planetarium is located at Pehowa Road, Kurukshetra surrounded by lush Green Park. Planetarium conducts full dome shows on Astronomy and educational activities.
Kalpana Chawla Memorial Planetarium has latest digital projection technology based equipment and 5.1-surround sound for projection of full dome planetarium shows. The projection system is housed in 12 meter dome having unidirectional seating arrangement for 118 persons. The gallery of the planetarium has interactive exhibits on astronomy. The permanent gallery demonstrates concepts like: A walk through Time, Day and Night, Weight on different planets, Seasons on Earth, World Time, Our Address in Universe, Our Solar System, Beyond Solar System, Astro Quiz, Zodiac Quiz etc. to the visitors. A special part of gallery is dedicated to Dr. Kalpana Chawla.
An outdoor exposition comprising of exhibits like Samrat Yantra, Sundial, World Time, Turn Faster, Celestial Umbrella, Why we see one face of Moon? Optical tree, Eclipses, Totems of Time, Gravity well, Planet-track and several other exhibits are displayed amid lush green ambience.
